Ellie was more nervous than she would have cared to admit. Yesterday had been a case of waiting for a signal that did not come, but today had been different. CHILD had sent a message that WITCH was in the jungle and that there would be a window tonight when she would be vulnerable. It was the green light. The operation was scheduled to begin at twenty-two hundred hours, but they would be transiting to the jungle sooner than that. The briefing had been called for midday, and the SEALs had gathered at one end of the garage in front of two large blown-up satellite images that had been stuck to the wall. Ellie went over to join them just as Commander McSweeney clapped his hands to bring them to attention.

“All right,” he said. “Settle down.” McSweeney took a small laser pointer and shone the light on the first image. “Here’s your recap, so pay attention. There are two teams involved in this operation: Alpha Troop and Bravo Troop. Alpha is already in-country—I’ll get to them in a moment.” He nodded to the map, where the pinprick of red light danced around a tiny collection of buildings that was surrounded by the green of the jungle. “This is our target. CHILD suggests that it is a cocaine laboratory belonging to the El Centro cartel. CHILD also suggests that WITCH is at the laboratory right now.”

A SEAL raised his hand. “We sure of that, sir?”

“She was seen here”—the commander moved the laser so that it shone on a settlement to the east of the laboratory site—“yesterday afternoon. CHILD suggests that she was last seen trekking into the jungle in the direction of the kitchen. She has been almost impossible to track down. The reason for that is she keeps a very, very low profile. She’s not ostentatious. She doesn’t show off her money like some of her predecessors. She moves every night or every other night, spending her time in jungle hideouts like this or houses and apartments in San Javier, Belen and Robledo—the places in Medellín where you wouldn’t want to go. Getting a fix on her like this has been practically impossible until now.”

The commander stepped across so that he could shine the laser onto the second map. This one was at closer scale, showing a collection of huts and other structures, most of which were shielded by the canopy of vegetation that stretched overhead.

“Alpha deployed two days ago to the area northwest and northeast of the cartel camp. Here and here. They’ve got close enough to suggest that you will encounter armed resistance, but nothing that you won’t be able to handle. You will approach from the south.” He moved the pointer and played the light over an area notable only for the emerald green of the jungle and the blue swipe of the river that ran through it. “You will drive out of Medellín in the chicken truck until you get to the swap point, here.
